Happy Saturday, Sweet Peas!
It occurred to me to me this morning that this coming Wednesday is Valentine’s day. Now, I hate Valentine’s day. I’ve only celebrated it once in my life and that was when I was sixteen. Other than that, whether I’m in a relationship or not I never really bothered. Why spend one day a year telling someone you love them when you should be doing that every day.
This year, much like last year if you’ve been a Sweet Pea reader that long, I won’t be celebrating Valentine’s day with a spouse or partner. Last year I spent the day treating myself, you can read the blog post here.
This year I’ve decided I’m going to have a Palentine’s! Which basically means I am going to spend the day with my Pals. Not that I have a lot of choices since I work with them, but I think it’s nice to not only show your appreciation for your significate other, but your friends as well.
Here are a few ways you can my Palentine’s day special for your Pals.
Cards – No, I don’t mean the soppy ‘I Love You’ cards…unless you want to go down that route. I mean funny little joke cards, that will give your friends a giggle. Maybe write a funny message inside, a private joke between the two of you, or a memory. Just a little something to show that you appreciate their friendship.
Go out for a meal – One of my best mates brought this to my attention a few days ago. He sent me a Snapchat of a Palentine’s menu at a local restaurant. I thought it was a brilliant idea! Valentine’s Day has always been a day to show how much you love someone. But I think society is finally learning that to love someone you don’t need to be in a romantic relationship. Friend are just as, if not more important and personally, I love my friends just as much as I do partners. So, spend a couple of hours over a table, either one on one or in a group. Chat, catch up, eat good food, forget the stress of life. Take a moment to enjoy that fact that these people (no matter how weird), are your people.
Have a night in – Have a Netflix and Chill in the way it was meant to be before couple go hold of it! Crack out the bean bags, blankets, popcorn and ice cream and binge watch Disney movies. Sing along to your favourite songs without shame because you’re friends won’t judge you. Let it Go!
Go on a ‘date’ – Again, why are these thing reserved for couples! Go on a date with your friends! You go the movies, mini golf, rent a boat! Try something you’ve never done before. You don’t need a boy/girlfriend to explore the world. If you can take the time off, go on a day trip. I think one of the stigmas about being single is that you’re ‘alone’. But you’re not. Has Friends not taught us anything!
Remind them – It happens to the best of us. We can take friendship for granted. Take a moment to remind your pals just how much they mean to you. Remind them that you are there for them and that they mean the world to you. Text them, call them, snap chat them or just talk. It doesn’t have be some grand show of emotion. It can be just a little gesture, like making them coffee.
To my friends who I know read this blog (I know two of you do), I love you. When I moved back to town after years away I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I’m glad that I found you. I’m glad that I have someone to pick me up off the floor after too much prosecco and to laugh at me months later when I still can’t drink it without having flashbacks. I glad that I’ve found someone else who will go to see horror movies at the cinema, then spend the whole thing with our hands over our eyes. I’m happy I found someone who will banter will me, insult me and take my insults back, but then call me the second you find out I’m not doing so good and stay on the phone with me while I cry. I love that I’ve found someone who loves makeup as much as I do and binge watches the same Youtubers as me! I love that you have my best interest at heart. I love that you’re my people.
So tell you’re friends you love them this Valentine’s day!
