The Greatest Showman Review

Hello Sweet Peas!

Now I don’t normally do movie reviews, but I felt that this film deserved to be talked about. I love going to the cinema, but I will never go and see a film twice. It’s a waste of money. I’ve only ever done it for Harry Potter (i forget which one) and Frozen.

I went to see The Greatest Showman three times. I haven’t stopped listening to the soundtrack since. I am obsessed.

And for good reason! The soundtrack to this movie has gone right up to number one of the charts. The song ‘This is me” sung by Keala Settle has the world singing at the top of their lungs! It is incredible!

My first reaction when I went to see this film was awe. I was bouncing in my seat from start to finish and I have people who can vouch for that fact. When I was younger, my dream was to join the circus (…strange yes I know. I was a strange child). Watching this reignited that dream, for the sheer impracticality of it. To do something simply because you want to, rather than because people say you should.

But there are several other reasons why I love this movie. Going back to Keala Settle and her character of the bearded lady. My heart was in my mouth watching her performance. Here’s a little trivia, many of the women who worked as ‘bearded ladies’ in the circus suffered from PCOS (for those of you who don’t know, its the condition I suffer from). The hair caused by the hormonal imbalance. What a lot of people thought was a novelty act, is actually some peoples reality. Keala’s performance of ‘This is me” had me almost in tears. I’ve listened to it over and over since. ‘I am brave, I am bruised, this is who I am meant to be.’ This has become a mantra for those days when I feel particularly down about myself.

My second reason for loving this film is its overall message. Follow your dreams.  This whole movie takes hold of that part of you that wants to succeed and gives it a little push. The lyrics and the beat really do spark something inside you and each time I went to see it I left thinking about my own dreams and ambitions. I can imagine that so many people are going to find comfort and strength in these songs.

The third reason for loving this movie. The cast. Do I need to go on? Hugh Jackman, whom I have adored for years, ripped his stitches from this cancer removal surgery during rehearsal (he sang when they told him not too).  When I know how hard actors have worked for a role, it makes me love their work even more. The whole cast is perfect, each character portrayed in a way that makes you love them (apart from Jenny…we were not a fan of Jenny. LIKE IF YOU AGREE!)

All told this film is fabulous. In a world of media telling us to be thinner, faker, richer. This film shakes you awake up

and screams in your face, BE YOURSELF! FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! DON’T JUST SURVIVE, LIVE!

If you haven’t seen it, I suggest going to watch it! This film is for anyone whose bursting with a dream.
